ABOUT BJELAŠNICA

Bjelašnica is a mountain located in the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, belonging to the Dinaric mountain system, with its highest peak reaching 2,067 meters. Due to the collision of air masses with the mountains, large amounts of snow fall on Bjelašnica, which is covered in snow from November to May, and sometimes even during the summer months.

Winter Tourism

Mount Bjelašnica is one of the mountains where the men’s alpine skiing competition was held during the XIV Winter Olympic Games in 1984. During the Winter Olympic Games, numerous sports and tourist facilities were built on Bjelašnica, which are still in use today. Covered in snow from November to May, Bjelašnica forms high snowdrifts that can reach several meters in height, making it one of the more popular sights and attractions.

At the highest peak of Bjelašnica, a meteorological station was built in 1894, which is the highest inhabited point in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bjelašnica features 8,345 meters of ski slopes for all alpine disciplines, with your journey starting on the ski trail that descends from the very top of Bjelašnica at an altitude of 2,067 meters, finishing at Babin Do at 1,266 meters above sea level, which is the same route as the Olympic downhill. Bjelašnica has a three-seat chairlift along the descent trail, a two-seat chairlift along the slalom and giant slalom trails, as well as three ski lifts. It is equipped with floodlights for nighttime skiing, allowing all night skiing enthusiasts to enjoy a well-prepared and illuminated slope with a moderate incline.

Cultural and Historical Heritage

The area of Bjelašnica was inhabited as early as the ancient times, as evidenced by rich archaeological finds. The first villages in Bjelašnica are mentioned in the fifteenth century, and Evliya Çelebi described Bjelašnica as a “strange, green-covered, and inhabited mountainous region.” The most significant monuments dating from the 14th and 15th centuries are the stećci found near the village of Tusila, as well as the necropolis of stećci in the villages of Lukomir, Čuhovići, and Blace.

Located on the southern slopes of Mount Bjelašnica, at an altitude of 1495 meters, is the village of Lukomir, declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The village of Lukomir represents the highest inhabited place in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is believed that the village has been inhabited for several hundred years. The national monument consists of structures located in the village, a necropolis with 18 stećci at the site of Vlaško groblje, and a necropolis with nine stećci at the site of Jezerine.

Hiking and Trekking

Bjelašnica has always posed a great challenge for every adventurer wishing to embark on the path of this mysterious mountain. Among the numerous hiking trails that traverse Bjelašnica, the most famous is the so-called “Josip’s Trail,” which leads to the highest peak of the mountain – 2067 meters. The trail is named after the legend of mountaineering and alpinism, Josip Siegmunud, who mapped and marked it in 1934. One of the most popular excursion trails is the one that leads from the village of Umoljani to Lukomir, alongside the Raktinica canyon, with a view whose beauty surpasses all descriptive powers.

Mountain Biking

If you want to explore the natural beauties of Bjelašnica and its surroundings in a more dynamic way, within the “Sarajevo Olympic Bike Park,” the cycling paths lead from the source of Bosnia in Ilidža across Mount Igman all the way to Babin Dol, and there are plans to mark 600 kilometers of mountain biking trails.
