ABOUT JAHORINA

Jahorina is a mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina and it forms a part of the Dinaric mountain system. The highest peak of the mountain is Ogrojelica with 1,916 meters above sea level. Jahorina Mountain is one of the largest ski resorts and winter tourist centres in the Balkans, and in 1984, Sarajevo and Jahorina hosted the Winter Olympics. Jahorina has over 25 kilometres of perfectly prepared ski slopes, and the average number of snow days per year is 175.

HISTORY OF JAHORINA

The first visitors to the Jahorina Mountain were Austro-Hungarians, who came for organized hunting and hiking. The Austro-Hungarian bourgeoisie built the first large building on Jahorina in 1878. The first hunting lodge was burnt down, as was the Romania home built in the same place. In 1923, the first hotel, now called the Hotel Šator, was built, and in the same year the first pair of skiers set off a row of Jahorine trails. After the Second World War, the burnt-out objects were restored, and in 1947 Jahorina received electricity. The first lift on Jahorina was built and opened on 29.11.1952, and Jahorina reached the peak of prosperity during the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo when the competition in alpine disciplines for women was held. After the Winter Olympic Games, the entire mountain infrastructure, including tracks and accommodation was modernized.
