Necropolis of Maculje

The necropolis of stećci Maculje was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. It is located in the area between Novi Travnik and Gornji Vakuf. According to local tradition, this necropolis is also known as the Stone Wedding Guests. It includes 101 stećak tombstones and 16 crosses. The stećci come in various shapes: 52 are chests, 32 are slabs, 11 are ridge-shaped, while the remaining 6 are difficult to classify. They are made of limestone, arranged in neat rows, and are well-preserved. The tombstones are oriented in the east-west and north-south directions, although some of them slightly deviate from these alignments. Among the decorations and symbols, there are rosettes, apples, crosses, a human figure with outstretched arms, as well as sun and crescent motifs. Notably, this necropolis does not contain any stećci with inscriptions. Depictions of a deer with its head raised and a horse can be found on two of the stećci, while one features a solitary hand.
