Vjetrenica is a cave located in the southwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the village of Donje Hočević in the Trebinje region. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024. This is one of the largest and most famous caves in the country. Vjetrenica is renowned for its extensive underground system, which stretches approximately 7 kilometers and includes various chambers, tunnels, and passages. The cave is known for its unique formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers.
The temperature inside the cave remains relatively stable, and the constant airflow contributes to its name “Vjetrenica,” which translates to “little wind” in English. It is also significant for its biological diversity and the unique organisms that inhabit the cave environment, including several species of blind fish and insects adapted to the dark subterranean conditions.
The cave is a popular destination for tourists and spelunkers, thanks to its stunning beauty and the opportunity to explore natural wonders.
