UNESCO's tentative or temporary list (the list of potential properties) serves as an inventory of sites within a country that it considers suitable for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Member states include in their Tentative Lists those sites they regard as cultural and/or natural heritage of outstanding universal value, which they plan to nominate in the coming years. Nominations for the World Heritage List are only accepted if the site has previously been listed on the tentative list. The natural and historical area of Stolac has been on the tentative list since December 11, 2007. Stolac is included on UNESCO's tentative list due to its significance as a historical and cultural region that possesses valuable archaeological and architectural remains. The city of Stolac is renowned for its numerous archaeological sites, including necropolises with stećci (medieval stone monuments), as well as historical and cultural landmarks dating from various periods, including the Roman and Ottoman eras.
